There was a sombre mood at Nyang'ao village in Rongo Sub County as five family members who were burned to death were buried on Friday.
The five who included an 80-year-old woman, her 41-year-old daughter-in-law and her three grandchildren aged 12, 7 and 5 years had been burned beyond recognition were buried at a tense funeral following reports that chaos would erupt at the ceremony.
There was a heightened police presence at the event with Rongo OCPD Kibet Kirui saying he deployed the officers after reports emerged that there were locals who were planning to create chaos during the burial.
"This was a well-orchestrated move to wipe out the entire home but we will pursue the suspects to the last man and ensure that justice is delivered to the victims," said Kirui.
The charred remains of the five victims had been burned beyond recognition when irate villagers torched their houses on Thursday last week on allegations that the family practised witchcraft.
The villagers accused the homeowner Elijah Dwallo of bewitching a neighbour after an alteration which saw the neighbours' son jailed for 12 years by Rongo Court over the assault.
The man identified as Mr Awuonda later died after Dwallo threatened him and attempts to seek help from a traditional healer alleged that the ailment had been caused by Dwallo's family.
Already nine suspects have been arraigned in court in connection with the incident.
