The former National Assembly Deputy Speaker says that he began being involved in the push for multiparty democracy after his first election to parliament.

He notes that the same was not easy, as it came with clobbering and harassment by the police, which saw him and fellow MPs repeatedly get assaulted by law enforcers.

Speaking on Monday, he recalled that while most of his colleagues took over, only three of them remained behind to take the beatings; ODM boss Raila Odinga and politician Muturi Kigano.

"Almost always, the only leaders who used to be left behind used to be Raila, myself and Muturi Kigano, extremely courageous guys and we used to be of course clobbered and teargassed," said Maalim on NTV's Am Live on Tuesday morning.

He recalled one such incidence where they were clobbered by the police while on their way for a prayer meeting in Majengo, at Wakulima in Nairobi, which resulted in Raila's arrest.

According to the former lawmaker, though he managed to evade arrest by shoving a police officer off his way, Raila was nabbed, as fellow politicians took off.

“They picked Raila like a bag of maize and threw him into a Land Rover, when I looked on both sides I was alone, I walked straight to the police officer and said get out of my way," he said.
