ODM leader Raila Odinga on Friday opened up about his family's strong ties with Abagusii people, saying that his father Jaramogi Oginga Odinga had established the connections in 1940s.
The former Prime Minister recalled when he frequently visited Mzee Musa Nyandusi, the father to Simeon Nyachae and Ayacko Nyandusi.
Speaking at Nyanturago village during the burial of Dr Hezron Manduku, Raila said at one point in life, Mzee Nyachae's brother, Ayacko, stayed with Jaramogi in Maseno.
"We have a strong connections here. My father was a great friend to Chief Nyandusi. We used to frequently visit them at their home near Kisii Town.
"Infact, Nyandusi asked Jaramogi to take in Ayacko, his eldest son while he was studying in Maseno. Jaramogi was teaching at the institution then," said Mr Odinga.
The relationship between Odinga and Nyachae deteriorated in 2002 when Raila opted to back Mwai Kibaki, the eventual winner. Nyachae finished third.
In 2007, Raila fielded Dr Robert Monda, who went on to beat Mzee Nyachae, sending him to oblivion from politics. But Raila maintains that the two families are working together.
Since then, the Nyachae family has never supported Mr Odinga, opting to back President Uhuru Kenyatta in the last three presidential election in the country.
But Nyachae's nephew, Dr Fred Matiang'i, is seemingly warming for Raila, with Gusii leaders urging him to work closely with the veteran leader.
