Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha on Friday raised concern over the increased cases involving the deaths of university students in the country.
In a speech read on his behalf by a senior ministry official Johnson Nanjakululu, Magoha said his ministry is worried over the trend that had been witnessed this year.
Reports from The Star indicate that the CS advised students to always seek solutions to problems citing that parents and other stakeholders are left disappointed by premature deaths that result from suicide or criminal activities.
“The country doesn’t benefit anything from a student’s death. Families and the taxpayers have heavily invested in you. Do not disappoint them with your premature death,” Magoha stated in the speech which was read during the Technical University of Kenya (TUK) graduation as quoted by the Star.
The CS further commended TUK for focusing on training students in diploma courses.
“I am pleased to note that TU-K has remained steadfast and is still offering opportunities to diploma holders to upgrade their skills in critical areas required for the country’s economic growth. I urge the University to stick to this mandate and ensure it remains faithful and true to its name - technical,” he said.
Magoha's sentiments on the rise of cases involving the deaths of university students came days after a lifeless body of a second-year student was found hanging from a rooftop at a classroom at Moi University's main campus at Kesses, Uasin Gishu County.
