Nyamira County commissioner Isaiah Nakoru has warned residents against stealing electricity in the region.
According to Nakoru, the government will launch a crackdown in deep villages to arrest residents who have connected electricity to their houses illegally.
“The government can’t condone people to continue stealing electricity. Locals intending to have their houses connected with electricity must contact Kenya Power to connect power to curb unnecessary deaths which results from illegal power connections,” he said.
He called on local chiefs to ensure residents who have connected electricity to their houses using the back door are reported to Kenya Power for legal action to be taken.
The commissioner insisted that local youths engaging in vandalism will also not be spared by the rule of law.
“Local youths stealing electric cables and other electricity-related materials should stop before the law catches up with them. Those who will be caught will be arrested be fined heavily or be sent to jail for several years,” he added.
Nakoru advised residents to switch off electric sockets when power is not in use to curb unnecessary fires and deaths.
