On January 13, 2017, three people died in a grisly road accident along Nairobi-Mombasa highway at Emali town in Makueni County after a vehicle they were traveling in collided head-on with a bus.
The accident occurred at the junction of Emali-Loitokitok road when a Chania Bus that was traveling from Mombasa to Nairobi collided with a Toyota Probox which was headed to Loitokitok.
The incident was confirmed by the Makueni Police Commander, Joseph Napeyian, who said three people died on the spot while several others sustained serious injuries.
The victims were rushed to Makindu Hospital for medication.
“What is happening is that these buses are rushing on the road to beat the time set by National Transport and Safety Authority where PSV vehicles are barred from traveling at night," Napeyian said.
Napeyian said a county government employee died on the spot at the same scene on Friday the same week after a trailer hit a motorbike at around 8 pm.
Another person suffered broken legs in the Friday accident.
Napeyian cautioned drivers plying on the busy Mombasa road to be cautious especially while approaching the Loitokitok-Mombasa road junction.
The Saturday accident brought to 11, the number of people who have died in road accidents since Thursday.
Remember that it is within one week, Thursday to Saturday.
Eight died in accidents involving motorbikes.
Many accidents have occurred in the area since then and people are worried about what the problem could be.
Some say between Sultan Hamud to Emali accidents occur because of overspeeding, others say it's a black spot but residents believe that there is unusual evil spirits 'majini' or witchraft in the area.
