According to Garissa Township MP Aden Duale, the former Prime Minister embraced the deal for political survival and convenience.

"“Raila wants to use the handshake to destabilise Jubilee, his hands are not clean on the genuineness of bringing people together,” said Duale.

Since the famous handshake that cooled political temperatures in the country, Raila has been at the centre of Kenyan politics once again.

However, leaders allied to Deputy President William Ruto have questioned the deal which they term as a move to shortchange the DP in his quest for the country's top seat in the 2022 elections.

Whatever the case, the Uhuru-Raila deal was a key milestone in cooling the country's political temperatures after the divisive 2017 election.

Whether it is a ploy to thwart Ruto's political ambitions, as his allies claim, remains to be seen.
