A new Coast-based party has vowed to go for Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi.
The Umoja Summit Party (USP) has vowed to broaden its support base, including wooing the two and other notable leaders from the coast.
The party was unveiled on Sunday, and is currently led by an interim office consisting of Matano Chengo (Chair), Mtana Mwaringa (Treasurer) and Naomi Cidi (Secretary General).
It comes at a time when both Joho and King have hinted at running for the presidency in 2022 general elections, with the leaders apparently keen to hand it over as the region's political vehicle in the polls.
However, both governors are currently staunch supporters of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), where Joho is the Deputy Party Leader.
But Chengo is arguing that the region has aligned itself to outsider parties for long, saying its time it forged its own way and approach the polls using its own vehicle.
"We are ready to face any political challenge ahead. We have worked for other political parties for far too long without any tangible benefits,” he told the Standard.
“We have decided Coast should have its own political party that will fight for the people’s rightful share of the national cake. It is a national party but with its roots at the Coast just like Wiper Democratic Movement,” reiterated the secretary general.
