Close witnesses said the gang of three men was involved in a conversation with a student suspected to be an accomplice of the gang before one of them stormed into the shop about five minutes later.

“One of the gang members entered the shop and came out with cash saying the money never belonged to the student,” said Esther Namai, a Maseno University student who was shopping at the market at the time of the incident.

The three with switch-knives entered a car parked nearby and drove away very fast towards Lwanda.

Meanwhile, the Mpesa shop agent, a student later identified as Mike cried out for help, alerting the residents who went after the car.

After about a half a kilometre of running battles, the driver lost control of the car due to the bumpy Lwanda feeder road and the vehicle overturned.

However, the residents could not get hold of the three men who left the overturned vehicle and escaped on their feet towards the bush.

No money was found at the scene which prompted the angry mob to set the vehicle on fire.

“They took all the cash I had. He threatened to stub me. I don’t know who they are,” Mike told the crowd that had gathered later amidst sobs.

Mike, an Economics student later left to Maseno Police to report the incident.

Some residents are of the idea that the suspected student might be connected to the robbery due to the style the robbery was conducted.
