The proposals by Ekuru Aukot will not see the light of the day despite getting requisite signatures for referendum push, Siaya Senator James Orengo has said.
On Thursday, Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission confirmed that Punguza Mizigo initiative had hit the target, giving an okay for the proposal to be taken to counties.
But at Siaya on Saturday, Orengo urged residents to wait for October when BBI team shall be tabling it's report ahead of referendum push engineered by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.
"I support what Otiende Amollo and Samuel Atandi have said that we are waiting for referendum question that will come after the report of Building Bridges Initiative which will come in October.
"Those who think that there shall be no referendum, we want to assure them that it will come. That referendum shall decide on the future of Kenya and the people of Siaya," he said.
The proposals by Aukot could now face rejection in counties given that ODM and Jubilee parties control the county assemblies. If rejected, then the process will die a natural death.
But Aukot was optimistic that MCAs will endorse the proposals, arguing that the referendum push by his team was people oriented contrary to other debates.
He said: “We came to you, you listened and endorsed. We thank IEBC for the above board signature verification exercise. This is for the people of Kenya.”
Interestingly, Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen has backed the proposals, arguing that they are people oriented and will be popular among MCAs.
