The pilot phase of the car-free days on Wednesdays and Saturdays starting from February 1 will be done this Friday.
According to the Ministry of Transport, this exercise will be carried out on selected roads within the Central Business District (CBD) in Nairobi.
The roads which will be affected include Moi Avenue, Harambee Avenue and the City Hall Way.
In a press briefing on Wednesday, Public Works Principal Secretary Paul Maringa announced that on Wednesdays and Saturdays starting February 1, all vehicles will be banned from accessing the CBD in a move to decongest the city.
He further revealed that only people on bicycles, police cars and emergency vehicles will be allowed to access the city center.
Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) vehicles will be used as the means of transport within the city.
The 64-capacity vehicles will operate on four routes which include Harambee Avenue, City Hall Way, Moi Avenue and Agha Khan Walk.
This move is expected to see matatu operators pick and drop passengers outside the CBD on these two days at specific termini.
People with personal cars are advised to use public means of transport on the two days as they will not be allowed into the CBD.
