Led by Senator Susan Kihika, the senators said it was inhumane for the county government to treat the street children in such a manner.

“These are human beings and no one should treat them as if they are less human. They are not children of a lesser God,” Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja said.

Senators Kihika, Sakaja, Nandi’s Samson Cherargei, Narok’s Ledama ole Kina and Makueni’s Mutula Kilonzo spoke when they visited the children at the John Mututho Rehabilitaion Centre.

Senator Ledama said that even in developed countries like the US, cities have a challenge of street children.

“I want to tell Governor KInyanjui that you cannot do that to children in the name of cleaning a city. My friend, even a city like New York has street children,” Ledama said.

When reports emerged that Nakuru County officials had been involved in dumping the children in a forest, Kinyanjui promised action on those involved.

“The county government has commenced investigations into reports that children from Nakuru streets were abandoned in a neighbouring county. Anyone found culpable will face action,” the county administration said.

The county government has since not issued any communication on any action that was taken.
