In this particular case, raw sewage was freely flowing into Riokombe River in Jogoo area, Kisii County. Residents of Nyankongo Village depend on the river for domestic use.

Before Hivisasa highlighted the story, the raw sewage had been flowing into the river for two weeks. Residents were forced to look for an alternative source of water to avoid contracting water-borne diseases.

Despite water being a devolved function, the Kisii County Government was struggling with managing the sewerage system in the area.

The story was highlighted by Geoff Gichana, a Hivisasa writer based in Kisii. Gichana covered the story after receiving a tip-off from an informant in the area. After publishing the article, Gichana shared it on various social media platforms, including Facebook and WhatsApp.

The story was picked up the Gusii Water and Sanitation Company Limited (GWASCO) which managed to fix the sewer line after three days.

GWASCO Managing Director Osborn Nanga apologised to the residents, arguing that the issue went unnoticed due to the remoteness of the area.

To avoid a similar incident from reoccurring, locals were advised against setting up buildings that interfere with sewer lines.
