An elected Member of County Assembly in Kisii County has protested Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed's decision to declare that her ministry will coordinate with security agencies to hunt down and arrest graduates who have failed to repay their HELB loans.
Samuel Apoko while speaking in Kisii town on Friday said Amina should first look for jobs for graduates who are HELB beneficiaries.
"Let Amina first find jobs for the jobless graduates who benefited from the HELB loan before she starts mobilizing security team to arrest loan defaulters. The plan to arrest and prosecute HELB loan defaulters is uncalled for," he said.
Mr Apoko urged leaders to stand up and ensure jobless graduates are not arrested.
"Where are the jobless graduates going to get the money from to repay their loans? As leaders we should condemn Amina who seems to be taking advise from confused advisers to harass jobless graduates," added the MCA.
According to the MCA, CS Amina should urge president Uhuru Kenyatta to write off the loans owed by jobless graduates the same way he has been writing off coffee and tea debts.
