Ainabkoi MP William Chepkut now claims the man captured in a leaked audio invoking the name of President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang'ula.
In a recording which has been doing rounds on social media, the man is heard telling a Dubai-based gold dealer, whose cargo had purportedly been confiscated at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, he was doing everything to ensure it was released.
He claims Raila was in communication with Uhuru, who as a result, had ordered Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i to follow up the matter.
“Raila met with the head of state on this matter and explained to him and the head of state has called the minister (Matiang’i). In the course of this week we will be able to finish this matter once and for all,” he tells the dealer who sounds very agitated.
According to Chepkut, neither Uhuru nor Raila was part of the scandal, in which Dubai's royal family is believed to have lost about Sh400 million.
The consignment which has caused diplomatic hiccups between Kenya and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is said to have belonged to the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed Al-Makhtoum.
The MP opined Wetang'ula was just playing games with the middleman since Uhuru could not have been part of conning his UAE counterpart.
"Hon Moses Wetangula's invoking Raila and President's names in his swindling schemes was just to massage the egos of the Arab men who were getting impatient," he said in a tweet on Saturday.
"There is no way the President can be involved in swindling fellow head of state in the name of Dubai Royal family," he added.
