A court in Garissa County on Monday sentenced a prosecutor attached to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to 12 months in jail after he was found guilty of taking a bribe.
Carey Francis Andai was accused of soliciting a Sh35,000 bribe from a Wajir businessman, Mohamed Muhamud.
The court heard that the accused person demanded the bribe from Mohamud to fast-track an assault case against his daughter.
The businessman, however, reported the matter to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the detectives set a trap for the prosecutor.
Andai is reported to have agreed to meet with Muhamud on November 15, 2016 in Wajir town where he would receive the money.
The prosecutor received Sh30,000 from Muhamud before EACC detectives moved in and arrested him.
The officers arrested him in possession of the money and took him to the Wajir Police Station where he was held before being arraigned in court to answer to charges of soliciting for a bribe.
Senior Magistrate Cosmas Maundu in his ruling found the accused guilty and ordered that he pays a fine of Sh100,000 or serve 12 months in prison.
