A senator is among suspects being investigated by detectives over a new wave of crime, involving the sale of fake gold.
Also on the radar of the detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are three politicians and three lawyers suspected of being the architects of the fake gold scam that has hit Nairobi’s posh suburbs.
The politicians and lawyers are said to be colluding with gold fraudsters to con unsuspecting foreigners billions of shillings by selling them fake gold.
DCI boss George Kinoti has now formed a special team to investigate the scam.
On Monday, May 13, police busted a fake gold syndicate at a house in Nairobi's Lavington estate.
Police are detaining 15 suspects following the operation where fake gold was also recovered.
Reports indicate that the government swung into action after members of the Dubai royal family lamented to senior government officials of having been defrauded close to Sh400 million by a gang posing as genuine gold sellers.
Foreigners have been advised to consult the police and the department of geology whenever they intend to purchase gold in Kenya to avoid falling prey to the cons who are roaming in Nairobi.
