Homa Bay Governor Cyprian Awiti is still undergoing treatment outside the country and cannot be able to obey summonses by Senate Public Accounts Committee, Senator Moses Kajwang' has confirmed.
Last month, Communication Director Juma Aluoch confirmed that Governor Awiti had asked for indefinite medical leave that would allow him seek medication in Berlin. Consequently, deputy governor Hamilton Orata took over in acting capacity.
“All affairs of the county will be run by the deputy governor as it has been since the governor has been unwell,” he said in a phone interview without confirming if Mr Awiti is out of the country.
“There is no cause for alarm and all residents will get relevant services from the county. There is no vacuum.”
Governor Awiti is battling partial blindness orchastrated by diabetes. Since 2017 elections, he has taken a low profile, causing anxiety within the South Nyanza County.
And with Senate on his neck over spending, Senator Kajwang' however, said Awiti has at least 30 more days to report to the Senate for grilling over various audit queries ranging from 2015/16 to 2018/19.
"Homa Bay Governor Cyprian Awiti has written to @KESenate that he is seeking treatment out of the country and requested a new date for consideration of the 2017/2018 @OAG_Kenya report. We've given 30 days for the Governor to appear, failure to which the law shall take its course," he wrote.
Mr Awiti has been experiencing toxic moments following a protracted court battle that saw him retain his seat after a long bruise with former MP Oyugi Magwanga.
Homa Bay MPs led by Opondo Kaluma and Milly Odhiambo, have been calling for his resignation due to poor health. Last year July, Raila Odinga visited the ailing governor in Nairobi.
