As schools opened for the first term on Thursday, Eldoret town was dotted with students and parents who thronged school depots for uniforms and academic paraphernalia with con men/women and thugs taking advantage of desperate shoppers looking school items.
One of the uniform-dressed students found herself trouble when she was allegedly lured into a mini shop selling books only to be roughed up by street thugs who were masquerading as shopkeepers.
They escaped with her pocket money unnoticed.
“One of the three told me that they have affordable shoes, I entered with them into a small shop to check and as soon as I dropped my bag they grabbed it within a short time without knowing,” Sharon, withholding the second name narrated what she went through on that fateful moments.
She said that those who were there never noticed and the owner of the shop could not realize the drama of the muggers in his shop.
A parent, Joseph Maina who spoke to hivisasa.com said he gave a man whom he thought that he was marking school uniforms Sh1,000 shillings expecting a balance of Sh700 only to have waited for the change for long; the man went for good.
“My students' uniforms were stamped and I paid the wrong person, he told me he had gone to seek balance, the man never returned and those around there told me I had paid the wrong person,” Maina said regretting to have been too naïve.
