Political analyst Ambrose Weda now claims that President Uhuru Kenyatta has no option but to back his deputy President William Ruto as his successor.

This comes amid confusions within the ruling Jubilee Party on Uhuru's stand, courtesy of his apparently growing closeness with opposition leader Raila Odinga.

But according to Weda, Uhuru cannot dare go against his initial pledge to back Ruto, basing on their pending cases against humanity at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

He said that the two can only be safe with one of them in power, and it is unrealistic to expect Uhuru to expose himself to possible prosecution by facilitating Ruto's defeat in 2022.

"The two have a pending case at the ICC and are only safe because they are in the presidency currently. Let's remember that the case was only suspended not thrown out," he said.

"It is therefore very wrong to think that Uhuru can turn against Ruto. It is only through Ruto that he can remain safe. It is only Ruto who can save him now that he is approaching retirement," said Weda.

Weda was speaking in an interview on KBC English Service's 'The Big Conversation' show on Wednesday morning.

The two were enlisted among the six suspects by former ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo over alleged involvement in the 2007 post election violence.

They are the only ones remaining on the hook following the acquittal of the remaining 4, and are likely to be recalled once out of power.
