Kipchoge was given the award on Wednesday at the United Nations offices in Nairobi by the Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma.

This was during the celebration of 73rd anniversary for the UN.

Kipchoge who recently set a new world record at the Berlin Marathon was awarded for his extraordinary performances, his work on HIV/AIDS in Kenya, and his endurance and courage.

Speaking during the event, CS Juma said the greatest marathoner of all time was awarded for his athletic heroism and determination to advance the spirit of sports.

Lauding Kipchoge, the Dutch Embassy appreciated his efforts both in sports and working to combat HIV/AIDS.

“The embassy congratulates marathon runner and world record holder Kipchoge on winning the UN in Kenya Person of the Year award for his work on combating HIV/AIDS,” said the ambassador.

The award comes only a day after Kipchoge was nominated for the 2018 IAAF Male Athlete of the Year award amongst other 10 nominees who were selected by an international panel of athletics experts, comprising representatives from all six continental areas of the IAAF.
