Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) officials in Mombasa risk losing their jobs after the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti started probing the illegal importation of gambling machines.
The DCI has embarked on investigations to establish how 169 gambling machines found themselves in the country yet no record to show how they were cleared by the agents at the port.
The DCI has read something sinister in the importation of the machines as the fight to end gambling gains momentum across the nation. DCI George Kinoti has since assured Kenyans that the matter will be examined and the persons behind the importation arrested as soon as possible.
“If it emerges that those who were expected to act failed, they will have to answer for abetting an economic crime,” said Mr Kinoti.
On Tuesday, The detectives busted the machines after a crackdown in the Free Area in the outskirts of Nakuru town. During the crackdown, the police managed to arrest five Chinese nationals in connection with the illegal business.
The foreigners were reportedly assembling the machines before the detectives busted them unawares.
The suspects were in the country on a one-month permit but it remains unclear why they were engaging in the business. An examination of their travel documents shows that they are aged between 30 and 50.
