The Kenya Meteorological Department on Tuesday gave an explanation of the strong windstorms that were witnessed in various parts of Nairobi.
The statement issued by the department several hours after the windstorm swept through the city, explained the occurrence of the strong winds.
Citizen Digital reported that part of the strong winds which resulted in power outage was also witnessed in Kirinyaga, Kitui, Thika and other areas in Nairobi.
The weatherman explained that the strong windstorm was coming from the Indian Ocean.
“What we are experiencing is a deep convective system in the southern section of Kenya. This system is moving from Coastal Kenya as it propagates inland toward South East low lands, Nairobi and Central parts of Kenya. The system is characterized by strong Southeasterly winds of about 15-20 Knots, updraft and downdraft winds↕️ with heavy convective rains,” said the meteorological department as quoted by Citizen Digital.
The department further noted that it was monitoring the winds.
“Areas around Nairobi was due to a localized storm due to an unstable atmosphere. We are monitoring it,” the department added.
The windstorm which took residents by surprise as there was no warning of such an occurrence brought business to a standstill in Nairobi and parts of Central Kenya with many of them were also left counting their losses.
