At least 21 pharmaceutical outlets have been closed down in Garissa county in an ongoing crackdown by officers from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB).
In the crackdown, those outlets being reportedly targeted include those operating under illegal registration and those with unqualified attendants.
In a social media update, the Poisons and Pharmacy Board revealed that apart from the 21 outlets that have been shut down, 15 others were being audited pending appropriate regulatory action.
"A total of 21 pharmaceutical outlets in Garissa County and its environs have been closed down by PPB in the ongoing crackdown operation of illegal pharmaceutical outlets. Another 15 premises were audited and appropriate regulatory action instituted," the Board revealed on its Twitter page.
The latest closures come barely hours after the Garissa Deputy governor Abdi Dagane met the board officials at his office on Wednesday morning.
The meeting was triggered by widespread concerns that a vast of outlets in the region were illegally operating, with some even offering locals with drug supplies whose expiry dates were long overdue.
It is now expected that the latest action by the Poison's board will help rid out unscrupulous businessmen out to reap big by offering substandard services to the unsuspecting public.
