A last-minute phone call by DP William Ruto led to confusions at a funeral in Borabu on Friday given that he had indicated his attendance earlier on.
Several supporters had camped at Borabu, Nyansiongo with some prematurely leaving the funeral of Mama Peninah Osero after learning of the cancellation of Ruto's trip.
"I was there and he gave Osero a call regretting his cancellation. He had deployed security officers on the ground and we all expected him here today. You could even see all the security officers were around.
"He said that the procedure of Prof Abel Mugenda's funeral was quite unique since professors were in charge thus his protocol affected. He couldn't leave early for Nyamira," a family member said in confidence.
Similar sentiments were shared by Mr Osero, a close ally of the DP who was set to host him. While he didn't get into details, he however confirmed getting a call from the DP.
"Yes, we were expecting him but he had to cancel. However, I can assure you that he will come. Not long from today because he holds Nyamira special at his heart. He spoke to me and regretted the change of his itinerary."
ODM leader Raila Odinga was also expected to attend but he chose Kisumu where he launched removal of water hyacinth from Lake Victoria.
Dr Ruto was also expected to share podium with Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, who also skipped the funeral for a trip to Ruaraka where he met GSU officers who took part in DusitD2 terror attack operation.
