Kenya’s veteran actress Mary Kavere popularly known as Mama Kayai has been feted by Riverwood Award Hall of Fame.

Mama Kayai who is well known for her cutting-edge acting prowess in a program called ‘Vitimbi’ was slapped with the Grand Warrior Award, on Saturday night during the 2018 Riverwood Award event held at Acacia premier hotel, Kisumu. 

The veteran Kenyan actress has been in the film industry for more than 30 years. Mama Kayai is celebrated as one of the first efforts to support founders in the acting industry. 

In her honour, the Kenya Films and Classification Board director Ezekiel Mutua promised to name a section of the Kenya cinema building after her. 

Mutua further said that a special fund would be set aside to aide Mama Kayai in starting a business and running it. 

”She is consummate. She is fluid and she is real. She, for the longest time, was not only the defining face of Kenyan situational comedy on TV but was also the only source of training and learning on how to act and express on TV,” KFCB wrote on Twitter.

Other participants feted in the star-studded Riverwood Awards Hall of Fame includes Seredo 2 (a Luo film), Eminent Media Inc., Dilemma, Supa Modo, Adeline Wairimu-Kidnapped, David Konana-Daktari, Kenneth Kinyua-Silence, Lulu Wilson, Kamau Wa Ndung’u and Mark Maina. Both grabbed different awards according to the categories.
