A section of North Rift Kenya Power contractors has hit out at the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) following allegations that the company lost public money through procured services, labour and transport.
Led by the regions powerline contractors' deputy chairman Andrew Mongare, the contractors dismissed reports by the office of the DPP that they were illegally paid over Sh159 million by the Kenya Power.
“The money we have received and yet to be paid by Kenya Power is purely our dues for the services rendered to the company as prequalified contractors,” Mongare told journalists in Eldoret town on Tuesday.
“Claims that have been made by the DPP’s office that we colluded with Kenya Power management to defraud the company are not true and unfounded,” he added.
The contractors further condemned the Kenya Power company for suspending the contracts they had been given saying the move has affected them financially as their payments were also suspended.
"Upon prequalification, we took loans from financial institutions in order to buy the necessary equipment and machinery to complete the contracts. The same loans have not been serviced prompting the financiers to issue demand notices while some have sought auctioneers to undertake loan recovery," noted Stephen Kiplagat, a contractor.
The over 100 contractors have now issued a one-week ultimatum to the Kenya Power company to pay them all their dues or face a court case.
