While the two leaders did not address the press, it is believed that they discussed a host of issues affecting Kenya among them the fight against graft and the status of the economy.

“This was a private meeting which had been planned earlier and was meant to engage ideas on various issues affecting the country,” an individual privy to the meeting told the Standard.

“They concurred that SMEs are critical in the economy and the country must find a way to help them run efficiently,” the source added.

The meeting comes almost a year since Mr Odinga met the senator's father, Daniel Moi at his Kabarak home where they discussed his unity pact with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In the Nairobi meeting, the two individuals also discussed possible inter-party partnership as a way to wage a serious fight against corruption, which they are said to have identified as the main challenge facing Kenya.

“Gideon and Raila appear to be reading from the same script on several issues and problems facing the country. They want to be part of the solution in the spirit of the handshake,” an MP allied to Raila said.

This comes amid Mr Moi's series of tours to Nyanza region, home turf to Mr Odinga. Last year, he attended a number of fundraisers in Homa Bay County where he insisted that he has no issues working with Raila.

Also, KANU Secretary General Nick Salat and his ODM counterpart Edwin Sifuna have also shared podiums in a number of functions within the populous Rift Valley region.
