Raila Odinga is leading secret campaigns to raise Sh15 millions as fine for estranged businessman Don Bosco Gichana, who is yet to be released.
Early this week, Bosco was sentenced to five years in prison on top of the fine but will not serve the sentence since he'd been in custody for an equivalent duration.
Kitutu Chache South MP Richard Onyonka revealed plans to raise the fine in order to secure Bosco's freedom.
"We thank all those who have been helping in prayers and finances. It has been a long journey but it's now over.
"We shall contribute the amount and secure for his freedom. We need him back home," he said.
An ODM politician who spoke in confidence said that Raila is actively involved in the matter.
On Tuesday, Raila is said to have asked for the judgement delivered by the Tanzanian court.
"He is actively involved and we are contributing as Bosco's friends. Mzee is steering everything," he said.
Journalist Nyambega Gisesa had intimated that it took efforts or Raila and President Uhuru Kenyatta to secure Bosco's freedom by asking for a lesser sentence.
He pleaded guilty to money laundering and fraud charges for the favourable sentence.
