Retired President Daniel Moi was on Sunday rushed to Nairobi Hospital for what the family terms as routine medical check-up.

Moi,95, has been struggling with his health for years, a move that saw him get hospitalised twice last year in Nairobi Hospital. He had initially suffered a knee injury.

Mr Moi’s Press Secretary Lee Njiru told the Nation that the former head of State was taken to the hospital for a check-up accompanied by his physician, Dr David Silverstein.

“Yes l can confirm that Mzee Moi visited The Nairobi Hospital for a routine medical check-up. 

"It is prudent for any human being to undergo regular medical check-ups, so there is nothing to worry about,” stated Mr Njiru.

Last week, the nonagenarian celebrated Moi Day quietly at his Kabarak home with the family and friends. The holiday had been struct off in 2010 but a court in Nairobi reinstated it last year.

In April this year, Moi did not make physical appearance at the burial of his eldest son Jonathan Moi. He remained inside his vehicle during the burial day at Eldama Ravine.

Mr Njiru, a long time press secretary to the retired head of state did not however give more details about the latest health details of the nonagenarian.

He retired from active politics in 2002 after staying in power for 24 years. His one time Vice President cum bitter rival Mwai Kibaki took over.

Moi's heir apparent Uhuru Kenyatta, who lost in 2002 presidential polls, would bounce back in 2013. He is also set for retirement in 2022 given that he's serving his last term.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga have visited Moi a couple times since last year at his Kabarak home.

The former President's son Gideon Moi, who doubles as Baringo senator, is keen to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta, a move that has out him at loggerheads with DP William Ruto.
