Residents of a village in Kablanga, Molo, Nakuru County are in shock after a 13-year-old girl committed suicide.
The class seven pupil, Sharon Chepkurui, took her own life after she was punished by her parents for spending the night away from their home.
The pupil at Matumaini Primary School did not return home on Friday after school and went out without her parents’ consent.
The father, Simon Mitei said they were worried when their daughter did not return home from school.
The following day, the mother who had gone out looking for her found her and took her back to the house where she was disciplined.
“I was about to leave the house to search for her when my wife returned with Chepkurui in tow. We were both angry. My wife punished her for spending the night out without informing us,” said Mitei.
The parents then left for the farm but were shocked to find the body of their daughter dangling from the roof of the house when they returned in the evening.
“I called her out several times, but no one was responding. At first, I thought she had gone out briefly. On entering the house, I found her body dangling from the roof of the house where she hanged herself with a rope,” added Mitei.
Michina chief Kennedy Kiago who confirmed the incident urged parents to play their role and pay close attention to their children.
The body was taken to Molo Sub-County Hospital mortuary.
