National and county governments have been urged to train and support farmers in a bid to educate them on technology and modern farming methods.
According to the University of Eldoret (UOE) vice-chancellor Prof Teresa Akenga, this will ensure there is food security in the country.
“There is a need to train and develop technologies and innovations that are geared towards increased food production,” said Prof. Akenga.
She reiterated that these include innovation of fast-growing crops, drought-tolerant crops and early maturity crops.
Prof. Akenga spoke during the University of Eldoret Annual Agri-Business Trade Fair on Thursday.
“Farmers should also be trained on new technologies such as irrigation, conservation agriculture, and sustainable land management practices which will ensure they get high yield thus increased food production,” the University of Eldoret Vice-Chancellor added.
She further said Kenya has faced adverse climate change which has caused negative social economic effects on sectors such as agriculture, livestock, forestry, water, health, fisheries, energy, and tourism.
Prof. Akenga noted that it’s the universities and research institutions that are supposed to come up with methods and solutions for solving these emerging issues in society.
She called on the government to provide financial support for the said institutions so that they can assist farmers to produce enough food to feed the nation.
