National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale was on Sunday forced to cut short his speech to flee following a clash between rival camps over the relocation of Oharey Market.
The incident started off after local politicians picked a bitter exchange of words which quickly escalated into exchange of blows and kicks. As the situation turned more violent, Duale was forced to rush into his waiting heavily-guarded vehicle and left in a huff.
Within a span of minutes, traders in the market area turned against others with punches, and it is then that security officers descended on the area to calm the situation.
According to a resident who spoke to KTN News, the attackers are known.
"Personally, I was thoroughly beaten by several rowdy youths. The attackers are known to us. We know them by their specific names," a visibly affected resident revealed to the mainstream media.
Moments later, concerned parents and relatives thronged Garissa Police Station to check on their loved ones who were rounded up and arrested as police tried to quell the situation.
MP Duale and governor Ali Korane have publicly engaged in a bitter spat on the relocation of Oharey market, a thing that the former is firmly opposed to.
