As the country celebrated the World Malaria day on Thursday, it has emerged that Garissa county has recorded a breakthrough in combatting the disease.
Despite falling on a malaria-prone zone, Garissa has seen a significant drop in its prevalence over the years.
Issuing an update on its social media platform, the county revealed that it took joint efforts between the two levels of government to realise the progress.
"There has been a significant reduction of malaria prevalence over the years in Garissa County despite the region falling under 'seasonal malaria zone' as a result of committing ourselves to both national & county strategic plans," maintained Garissa county health department.
As it is at the moment, Malaria prevalence in the county stands at one per cent. Interestingly, the national prevalence is pegged at eight per cent.
"The national prevalence of Malaria stands at 8% while the prevalence rate in Garissa County is 1%. Garissa County that falls under 'seasonal malaria zone' is committed in the fight against malaria," the health department further revealed.
Despite the progress made, malaria still remains one of the major killer diseases in the region. Available statistics also indicate that children below the age of five years are the most affected.
However, the disease can be prevented by sleeping under treated mosquito nets.
