Nyamira County is located in Nyanza province of Kenya and has an urban population of around 10,000.
It has four constituencies in it namely; West Mugirango, North Mugirango, Kitutu Masaba and Borabu.
It has some places with the meanings of their origin which most people didn't know. The places are as below;
Nyangoko
This is a place in Nyamira county which is derived from the word "engoko" a gusii word for a hen. It is believed that this place had a lot of hens hence the name.
Kabianga
Durind the migration of the Bantu people, the kisii people settled at this place because it was fertile. But with time, their animals and children begun to die and they decided to move ahead. They named the place Kabianga meaning they refuse.
Onkubokia
The place is derived from the words "gokua" and "bokia" meaning dying all night. It is believed that people in this place used to die all night.
Mabariri
Mabariri comes from the word "ribariri" meaning red in english. This place is believed to have red soil which is so fertile that is why it was given the name.
Mekenene
There is a tree by the name strawberry tree, in a gusii language it is called "enkenene". This place was believed to have many straw berry trees
Manga
Manga comes from a word "emanga" meaning hill . Manga is said to have many hills and the origin of its name comes from it.
Nyabigena
This place is derived from the word "ebigena" meaning small stones. Nyabigena therefore is a place that was full of the small stones hence the origin of its name.
