Deputy President William Ruto, going by his political activity since the conclusion of the October 26th, 2017 repeat election is determined to become Kenyan's fifth commander in chief.
However, what is not yet clear is who he will pick to deputize him during the polls.
In the list of those from whom he is likely to pick his deputy are Central Kenya politicians who include Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru.
Others in the Mt Kenya list are Kimani Ichung'wa (Kikuyu MP), Prof Kindiki Kithure (Tharaka Nithi Senator) and former Meru Governor Peter Munya among others.
But what are the chances that Ruto will pick Waiguru?
The chances may be minimal. In Kenya's history, there is no election where a top presidential candidate ever picked a woman as a deputy. Kenyans are still clogged with the mentality that in political leadership, men are to bit as they make 'better leaders'.
That Ruto's decision to pick Waiguru may not actually endear his candidature to some voters particularly those who still do not approve women leadership- and this group is sizable enough to tilt the results of a presidential election.
There are chances therefore that Ruto will not grumble with a female deputy. In fact Waiguru's record in corruption fight is already soiled following the NYS's Sh971 million lose. Her name was widely mentioned in connection to the scandal.
Equally, it is common in Kenyan politics for leaders to say that they are defending their respective elective seats because they want to complete development projects they started during their first term in office.
Waiguru may opt to abandon the idea of deputizing Ruto and defend her seat on that particular argument, giving Ruto a lee-way to pick any other candidate to deputize him in the presidential race.
