Confirming the incident, area assistant chief Francis Masanyi said the deceased Elmeldah Kwamboka was alone in a local quarry when she met her death.

"She was at the local quarry when she was buried alive. Efforts by locals to rescue her were in vain because she was dead by the time her body was retrieved from quarry," he said.

Masanyi said her body was moved to RAM hospital morgue in Kisii County waiting for burial.

He warned locals to be careful when visiting quarries saying they risk being buried alive.

"I'm appealing to members to stop going to quarries alone. When going to such dangerous areas ensure the soil is not delicate as this will help in curbing unnecessary deaths," he added.

The chief urged locals to help the family of the deceased to give her a decent send-off.

"Locals should be supportive to the deceased family during this trying moments," Mr Masanyi stated.
