Uasin Gishu has become the first County Assembly to pass a motion in support of the Punguza Mizigo Bill fronted by Thirdway Alliance party.
According to the motion mover who is the chairman of the Assembly's Delegated and Legislative Committee Patrick Bundotich, the County Assembly passed the bill because it will bring funds to grassroots and address overrepresentation.
“The bill having gone through the committee, the County Assembly and public participation by citizens of Uasin Gishu, we unanimously agreed to support it,” said Bundotich who spoke to the press at the County Assembly buildings on Tuesday.
The motion was seconded by Langas MCA Francis Muya who said the bill will reduce overrepresentation and bring development to the grassroots.
“The bill will ensure that funds will be channelled to Ward levels which will be the central unit of development thus the electorates will feel devolution. I now urge the Senate and Parliament to approve it,” said Muya.
Uasin Gishu County Assembly Speaker David Kiplagat who chaired the session said the bill was debated and passed unanimously by MCA’s and that he will be presenting the certificate of approval to the speakers of the National Assembly and the Senate.
The Punguza Mizigo initiative wants the reduction of MPs from the current 416 to 147, removal of Woman Representatives and nominated leaders among other things.
It requires the support of at least half of the 47 County Assemblies to be presented to Parliament for debate.
