Former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama becomes the latest leader from the Ukambani region to openly differ with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka on matters local politics.

Muthama, while speaking in Machakos on Wednesday, accused Kalonzo of auctioning the Kamba community, after he vowed to support President Uhuru Kenyatta past 2022.

He termed himself as the new Ukambani kingpin.

It is very possible that the firebrand leader, a long-time ally of the former Vice President, is simply fed up with Kalonzo's dynamism and lack of seriousness with regards to his 2022 presidential bid.

By declaring his support for Uhuru, Kalonzo might have meant that he will support whoever Uhuru backs for the top seat, even if it is not him.

Also, unlike Deputy President William Ruto who seems serious about making his bid successful, Kalonzo has only been declaring support for Uhuru, which will not be of any help to his bid.

Muthama, therefore, finds it useless to keep following Kalonzo who seems unlikely to deliver the presidency, hence his vow to lead the region by forming a formidable alliance.

He could also be using the same tact to topple Musyoka, who is currently the de facto kingpin of the Kamba people.

Given that the seat is also being eyed by Machakos governor Alfred Mutua, Muthama is aware that he stands a better chance of eating into Kalonzo's support base before 2022.

He has been close to the leader for too long and knows that by parting ways with him, the people will believe that he has some good reasons to leave him and so should they.

This is not the case with Mutua, who also appears like a real threat to Kalonzo's influence in Ukambani and who has always been attacking Kalonzo, making him appear malicious.

If Mutua was not a threat, Kalonzo's allies would not be responding to his attacks and assuring the nation of Kalonzo's intact influence in the region.

Finally, chances are high that this is a strategy by the Kalonzo-Muthama axis to attract national attention ahead of a major political declaration.

This can be based on the fact that a few weeks ago, Muthama promised to broker an alliance between Kalonzo and Ruto.

If Muthama is indeed against Kalonzo supporting Uhuru, he should have been angry since November last year, when Kalonzo declared himself Uhuru's spanner boy.

Kalonzo made the remarks during the burial of his father, which was attended by Uhuru, and said that nobody should question his support for Uhuru.

If Muthama is not comfortable with Kalonzo supporting anybody else, why did he promise to broker an alliance between Kalonzo and Ruto, well aware that Ruto is going for the presidency and will not settle for anything less?

Bottom line is that this is just another political stunt which has very little to do with the common Ukambani citizen.
