Every community has its musicians who churn out tunes that every single man and woman, boy and girl dance to. Kalenjin is no exception.

There are numerous artists who produce songs, which, according to yours truly, conform to some distinct characteristics. These are:

The musician hails from the Kipsigis community

We have since accepted that the Kipsigis community is the de facto Hollywood of the Kalenjin land. Many celebrities come from that area. Musicians especially hail from the counties of Bomet and Kericho. Chances are high that the hit song you are jamming to comes from Kipisigis land.

Lyrics

The lyrics are quite simple. The muse can be as simple as going to visit a friend in Kabianga or Eldoret or any other town. The lyrics will go like: "I went to Eldoret to visit my friend/ He was so glad to see me". This is then repeated and then comes the chorus.

If you are approaching a particularly sensitive topic such as sex, it is good to use the euphemism. Some of these great songs about sex can be as innocent as about a banana.

Greetings

It is the norm, some sort of an unwritten procedure. Every great song has it. Here, you greet people you know, every one of them. You get the feeling that some people pay these musicians just to hear their names mentioned in a song. And that makes the song even greater. Notable mentions are Bore Mista, Plali wa Plali and DJ Kiproo. These are ‘cartels’ in the ecosystem.

The song is produced by these two great producers

The undisputed DJ Khaled and David Guettas of Kalenjin land are two producers: DJ Wesso and another from Big Tunes records (his name escapes me). Mention a great song and chances are high that it passed through the hands of these two talented producers.
