Scores are feared dead after an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 passenger jet crashed on its way to Nairobi, Kenya.

The plane, which departed from Addis Ababa, had 149 passengers and eight crew members on board before the tragic incident occurred. 

According to the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's, the incident occurred at 08.44 local time on Sunday, moments after the plane took off their airport.  

Details of the accident, however, remain scanty as investigation into the cause of the incident continue.

"The Office of the PM, on behalf of the Government and people of Ethiopia, would like to express its deepest condolences to the families of those that have lost their loved ones on Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 on regular scheduled flight to Nairobi, Kenya this morning," the office of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said on Twitter.

The Ethiopian Prime Minister has assured his citizens that airline staff will be sent to the accident scene on a rescue operation mission.

Leaders have continued to send their messages of condolence to the Ethiopian nation following the revelation.

The crash comes barely a week after a chopper crash in Turkana claimed the lives of Deputy President William Ruto’s pilot Captain Mario Magonga and four Americans.
