In what could be a new political twist in South Nyanza, a bedrock of Raila Odinga, thousands of locals seems to be shifting their political allegiance to area Governor Okoth Obado.

When he toured Suna East and Masara on Monday in the company of DP William Ruto, a region that has traditionally backed Raila Odinga, thousands of locals could be heard chanting anti-Raila slogans.

"Obado ni Baba, si Raila, Obado for Deputy President, William Ruto for president," the charged crowd could be heard saying.

It loosely translates to: Obado is our king, not Raila Odinga. Obado for Deputy President, William Ruto for president."

This is the first time Obado was making a public appearance after 34 days in prison over the death of Sharon Otieno, his girlfriend.

A section of the crowd was seen carrying posters written 'William Ruto for President, Obado for Deputy President."

So weighty is the message that the ODM brigade could return to Migori, which seems to be brewing rebellion against Raila's dominance.

After the death of his father Oginga Odinga in 1994, Raila inherited the huge following when he quit Ford Kenya for NDP and has controlled Luo Nyanza since then.

It is however early to tell if the resistance by Obado could materialize to something that can topple Raila's grip.
