Voting for the new Chancellor of Moi University started early on Friday in the institution’s Senate building.

The position was advertised after the contract of the current Chancellor Prof. Miriam Were ended.

Prof. Were has been on the helm of the Kesses-based university since her appointment in 2013.

According to a list of nominees posted on the university website, Prof. Were is also seeking re-election for another 5 years term. 

Prof. Were, a medical doctor, health specialist, teacher and publisher is currently also the chairman of Kenya National Aids Control Council (NACC) and board of AMREF among others.

Other nominees seeking the post include Dr Edward Rege, who is the founder and Chief Executive Officer PICO, Eastern Africa as well as founder and CEO of Emerge Africa. He has long-term experience in planning and executing strategic plans.

Prof. Ratemo Michieka who is currently a professor in the Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences in the University of Nairobi is also vying for the post.

Another individual seeking the post is Dr Julius K Kipng’etich. He is the regional Chief Executive Officer of Jubilee Holdings Limited, deputy chairman of the Standard Group Limited and former director of the Kenya Forest Service (KFS)

Dr Peter Munga, a businessman and entrepreneur who is the immediate former group chairman of the Equity Bank Group is also vying for the seat.
