Two suspects who have been charged with attempted murder of former Garissa Finance Executive Idriss Mukhtar have declined State offer to be granted security.
The prosecution had proposed that the two accused persons, Hussein Aden and Juliet Njoki,p be granted security after they were released on bond two weeks ago.
According to the prosecution, the two accused persons are allegedly facing security threats.
The prosecution wanted them to be placed under witness protection pending the start of their trial next month.
However, the accused person’s lawyer Danstan Omari told Milimani Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi that his clients are not interested in the State offer.
“My clients have read that proposal by the prosecution and are not interested in it,” he said.
Omari said that his clients are comfortable with the general security and don’t need any enhancement.
The prosecution, however, maintained that safety for the accused persons is important and amounts to a fair trial.
“We leave things as they are at now but in case they (accused persons) change their mind, we are ready to execute the proposal,” Senior Prosecution Counsel Catherine Mwaniki told court.
Aden and Juliet are charged with attempted murder of Idriss.
They are also charged with conspiring and planning to kill Idriss lawyer Charles Kanjama.
The two are out on Sh500, 000 cash bail.
Two weeks ago, Idriss family wrote to the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji complaining over the slow pace of investigations into his attempted murder.
The family also demanded the arrest and prosecution of Garissa Governor Ali Korane and his brother Mohamed Bunow who it claimed are the alleged masterminds in the case.
The DPP, however, denied slowing down the case indicating that investigation file is yet to be forwarded to him.
Mukhtar, who is battling for his life in ICU, has since been airlifted to India for specialised treatment.
