Veteran politician Koigi wa Wamwere has likened President Uhuru Kenyatta to the dreaded Biblical leader of Egypt Pharaoh.
Pharaoh was the political and religious leader of the Egyptian people, holding the titles: 'Lord of the Two Lands' and 'High Priest of Every Temple'.
Known for hard-hitting commentaries, Koigi said Uhuru is running the government with policies similar to those used by the Egyptian leader.
“President Kenyatta’s legacy projects are like Pharaohs’ pyramids in Egypt,” the politician said on Saturday.
In a lengthy commentary shared on his Facebook page, Koigi poked holes into Uhuru’s housing project where employers and employees are being imposed a 1.5% tax each to fund the project.
Employees will be deducted 1.5% of their basic salary and a similar deduction will also be paid by the employer.
Simply put, the government will be getting 3% of every employee’s basic salary every month for the housing project.
Koigi wonders why a government can reach a point to force people to own homes.
“It (the deduction) should be voluntary, not compulsory or imposed. If one has a house, one should not be forced to build or buy another by force,” Koigi said.
The human rights activist also faulted the policy saying contractors will win tenders to work on the houses where they will make profits yet they did not raise the capital.
“The housing levy will raise all the money tender winners will require to build the houses without raising necessary capital themselves.
The only capital tender winners will need to build these houses will be contracts. So the housing scheme will not only be for Uhuru’s legacy but also to enrich people with right contacts, thereby enhancing graft,” Koigi said.
Koigi opines that just like some Egyptians died building Pharaoh’s pyramids, a section of Kenyans will also die trying to finance the project.
“Citizens must not sacrifice lives for a legacy because some will be enslaved and killed building Uhuru’s legacy just as it happened to the Egyptians constructing pyramids, the legacy of Pharaohs,” he said.
Koigi added: “ From where shall I get the energy to resist or build Uhuru’s pyramids?
