Nyali Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali, has written to the Environment Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko, protesting the illegal dumping of waste at VoK area in Ziwa La Ng'ombe ward.
The lawmaker wants the dumpsite closed and waste relocated to respective dumping sites, saying County Government trucks have been doing serious dumping of garbage at the site despite the area being less than 100 metres from residential areas.
In a letter dated August 28, and copied to the National Environment Management Authority (Nema) and the County Government of Mombasa, Mohammed Ali said VOK is not a gazetted dumping site and that what the County Department of Environment is doing is the highest level of impunity.
"This garbage pose huge environmental and health threat to my residents considering the dumpsite borders closely residential areas. I have asked the CS Environment to see into it immediately that the garbage heaps be cleared, the site be closed and the area be fenced since the dumping takes place on Government land," he said.
The letter comes months after Governor Ali Hassan Joho's administration closed the Kibarani dumpsite which has been in use for the past 50 years, receiving 90 percent of solid waste generated in the county.
The County Government announced that only two dumping sites will be used; Mwakirunge in Kisauni and Shonda in Likoni Sub-County.
Kibarani would be turned into a recreation park to boost tourism.
