Construction of one of the roads that was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta in Siaya last year has stalled due to lack of finances.
The 28-Kilometre Ukwala-Ugunja-Raumbwa road was launched by Uhuru during his Nyanza tour in December 2018 at a cost of Sh1.2 billion.
Confirming the same, Siaya Senator James Orengo and Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi said that the project is suffering from shortage of funds as the monies allocated for it were not enough.
“The funding has been delayed for long. The payments have not been made up to now, which is a huge problem,” Wandayi told the Standard.
He called upon the involved state agencies to act with speed, failure to which, he noted, the contractor handling the job could desert the project.
"As a matter of fact, we have received information that the contractor may not continue,” he added.
Orengo accused the relevant state agencies of defying the President's orders to have the road ready as soon as possible.
“We should be talking about other roads, not this one. Remember there is the Siranga to Sega road, which must also be completed. It will be wrong to defy the President’s orders,” he added.
The road which is under the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and is being constructed by the China Overseas Group company.
