Former Lagdera MP Farah Maalim has asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to ensure that the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) who are in Somalia under AMISOM remain in the war-torn country even after his term in 2022.
Maalim also wants Uhuru to include regional security in his Big Four development agenda.
The former MP argues that the presence of KDF in Somalia has stabilised the country especially in areas bordering war torn Somalia.
According to Maalim, the president should commit more to the country’s external security even as he serves in his last term in office.
“KDF presence in Somalia under AMISOM has been fruitful in terms of Kenya's and regional security mostly in fight against terror militants” he said.
The former MP also urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to engage with Somalia government on matters security.
He alleged that the Somali government is not keen on eradicating terror militants.
A section of North Eastern leaders among them Garissa Township MP have proposed for KDF to remain in Somalia for longer.
North Eastern region especially Mandera and Garissa counties have been hit with deadly Al-Shabaab attacks in the recent years.
Last week, North Eastern governors convened in Mandera and vowed to spearhead the war against Al-Shabaab.
“We are not afraid and we will take the war to their (Al-Shabaab) doorsteps,” Mandera Governor Ali Roba said last week.
KDF was deployed to Somali in 2011 under the tag 'Operation Linda Nchi' and is now under the AMISOM.
