Kalonzo served as a Vice President under Kibaki's regime in the coalition government.

Kibaki had appointed Kalonzo as the Vice President at the heart of post-election violence caused by the 2007 disputed presidential election.

In his memoir, ‘Against All Odds’, Kalonzo writes that he agreed  to be the Vice President after Kibaki promised to support his presidential bid in 2013.

Kalonzo writes that Kibaki’s allies convinced him to take the position promising many things that he says were never fulfilled.

While defending his decision to take the VP position, Kalonzo writes that it would have been disastrous for Kenya if he had declined.

“My decision to join the government at the heart of post-election violence in 2007/2008 helped save lives,” Kalonzo writes.

Kalonzo, a long-serving Foreign Affairs Minister writes that Kibaki was a good boss who delegated majority of the functions to him.

The Wiper Party leader, however, laments that Kibaki started snubbing him as 2013 approached.

The former VP in his book says Kibaki abandoned him and developed a love for President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto.

“I was slowly abandoned by Kibaki and the promise of being supported for presidency in 2013 faded away with Uhuru and Ruto’s entry into the succession politics,” he writes.

Kalonzo complains that towards the end of his tenure, Kibaki refused to see him.

“One day I went to have a discussion with him at his Harambee House office but he declined to see me,” Kalonzo writes.

Kalonzo later teamed up with Raila to contest in 2013 general election under the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD).

The two lost the presidential election to Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto.

In 2017, Kalonzo again teamed up with Raila on NASA coalition but lost for the second time to Uhu-Ruto.

Kalonzo is now seeking to contest for presidency in the forthcoming 2022 general election.
