Muthama is also a close ally of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Muthama did not vie for any political seat on August 8, 2017 elections.

The politician claimed that he could not vie for any seat so long as Governor Alfred Mutua was on the ballot.

Muthama, a critic of Governor Mutua said he cannot work with the governor whom he has severally branded a failure.

One year down the line after the polls, Machakos residents and politicians seem to be missing Muthama’s role in the county politics and leadership.

A section of politicians and residents have openly said they miss him in the county leadership.

The politicians argue that the county's leadership is no longer the same without Muthama’s role.

On Sunday, Matungulu MP Stephen Mule publicly said Muthama’s absence in active politics is hurting Ukambani.

Mule said Muthama is needed so as to rescue the county since he is among vocal leaders in Machakos.

He added that Machakos has continued to lag behind after Muthama failed to contest for any seat in 2017.

Mule urged Muthama not to watch as Machakos and Ukambani go astray.

He spoke at a church in Tala, Matungulu Sub County on Sunday.

According to political analyst Peter Ngure, Muthama’s influence in Ukambani politics is still high.

Ngure argues that Muthama’s style of politics and approach to issues is needed for Ukambani ahead of the 2022 politics.

“You cannot rule Muthama out of Kamba succession politics because he has the numbers, the voice, and influence,” Ngure said.

Muthama is backing Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s 2022 presidential bid.
